When you can’t start (even when you want to)
You know what you need to do.
It’s not a mystery.
It’s on your list.
You’ve probably thought about it multiple times.
And yet… you can’t start.
You might:
stare at it
avoid it
do literally anything else instead
Not because you don’t care—but because something just won’t click.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not lazy.
And you’re definitely not alone.
WHAT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENING
When you can’t start a task, it’s usually not about motivation.
It’s about:
not knowing where to begin
the task feeling too big or unclear
too many possible ways to do it
pressure to do it “right”
Your brain doesn’t see a clear, safe entry point—so it pauses.
👉 Not because it doesn’t want to do the task
👉 But because it doesn’t know how to start it in a manageable way
WHY “JUST START” DOESN’T WORK
You’ve probably heard:
“Just start. Once you start, it’s easier.”
And while that’s sometimes true… it skips over the hardest part:
👉 how to start
If the starting point isn’t clear, your brain keeps searching for it—and gets stuck instead.
WHAT ACTUALLY HELPS
The goal isn’t to force yourself to start.
It’s to:
👉 make starting feel possible
STEP 1: FIND THE FIRST VISIBLE STEP
Not the whole task.
Not the end goal.
Just:
“What is the first actual, physical thing I would do?”
Examples:
open the document
pull up the email
gather what you need
write a rough first sentence
If you can’t see the first step, your brain can’t start it.
If figuring out the first step is where you get stuck, I’ve created a simple tool that helps break tasks down into something you can actually start.
Task Breakdown Ladder / First Step Finder
STEP 2: REMOVE DECISIONS
A lot of “stuck” comes from too many choices.
Instead of:
“How should I do this?”
Try:
“What’s the simplest way I could begin this?”
Not best. Not perfect.
👉 Just simple.
STEP 3: LOWER THE EXPECTATION
You don’t have to:
finish it
do it well
make it perfect
You just have to:
👉 begin
Even if it’s messy, slow, or incomplete.
STEP 4: LET SMALL COUNT
Starting doesn’t have to look impressive.
It can be:
opening the file
typing a few words
setting things up for later
That still counts.
And it often makes the next step easier.
A QUICK REMINDER
You’re not avoiding things because you don’t care.
You’re getting stuck because the starting point isn’t clear enough yet.
That’s fixable.
CLOSING✨
You don’t need to figure out the whole task.
Just find the first step you can see.
Start there.
